motivation.
I was walking down the street the other day and I heard a common sentiment that just made me laugh. A guy and girl (friends, not a couple) had been chatting about some common interest and the guy goes, "I would join if you start a group". classic.
My first instinct was to laugh and think, "jeeeeez, people are lazy. always waiting for others to do the grunt work and then freeloading off of peoples' work". My second thought was , "He should take initiative". Ah hah... that's the problem.
Language. "Take initiative" is almost an oxymoron. Right from the linguistic get go, English has set us up to fail and freeload in the doing department. I suppose one could "have initiative" or "take the bull by the horns", but even still shouldn't there be a more overt nod to a verb like "do"?
Conclusion: there are a few options:
1) we become conscious of our weaknesses and start doing
2) we move to change the verb-noun usage of the phrase
or
3) wait for someone to do either of the above.
